A Star for Lee in Hive 3

I'm in under the wire!
Not really, because this won't get in the mail until tomorrow or Monday. Sorry for my slowness, and thanks for the great block idea, Lee. I was glad to use my (rusty!) paper-piecing skills.  I didn't have a big variety of fabrics in Lee's palette, so I needed a block that only required a few fabrics.  I used a free pattern I found at Threadbare Creations, which is a great blog full of fun stuff and some great patterns.

Hive 5 - Last Minute Finish

This wasn't my month for using my time well.  After a search through my stash, and a quick trip to the store,  was able to piece together this block.

Believe it or not, the individual blocks are square.  I was in a rush to take a photograph.  It's packaged and ready for send off.

Some Last Minute Posting in Hive Four!

Where did March go??

I actually finished all my beehive blocks early this month and then let them sit and never mailed them all month long. Yikes!!

Here is the block requested by Patty. It was very much out of my comfort zone but I did enjoy it and can even see myself making one similar one day! One of my favorite things about bees is getting to try things I would never, in a million years think of doing for myself! Thank you Patty, for expanding my horizons and I cannot wait to see this come together. This will be in the mail tomorrow (so sorry it's late!!!!!)

March Hive 4 Coming Together

Thank you all!  This is going to turn out pretty cool.  Still awaiting a few blocks.  Have received from 8 blocks from 7 in my hive so far.

Hive 1 March Block for Ophélie

Hello Ophélie!  Here is the block I made for you.  I really love the colors you picked. I like paper piecing so this was great for me.  I did double up some fabrics and matched them in different ways.  The olives intersect while the dark teals are mirrored.  I've packed this up and am mailing it shortly.

Hive 3 Block for Lee!

Lee, I hope you enjoy this block!!  The hardest part about this month for me was choosing a block - I've been in a bit of a creative slump lately, so choosing and placing fabrics was rather a challenge for me.  It's odd, usually it's second nature, but thanks for helping bump me out of my slump! This will be in the mail tomorrow with tracking.
Thanks!

Hive 5 block for Maja

Hello all!

This month has been...crazy.  I finished the block on the 9th, but didn't send it out until today.  Ugh, I'm so sorry Maja!  This was a fun block, and I have always wondered how people put the tiny pieces together to do this.  Little did I know there was a trick!  Thanks for this choice!

Hive 3

Hello hive 3, Rose here.
I love star blocks.  I use stars in many quilts that I work on. I hope these two stars fit in your design, Lee. Enjoy .

Hive 7,March

Em,  I loved the colors from your photo.  Great block to make. I have very hard time posting photos to this site. I have mailed your block.  Posted photo on instagram.

Hive 3 Star Block for Lee

I am a bit embarrassed with how long it took me to get it together this month...but here is my star block for Lee!

Choosing was fun...I went to my book "50 Fabulous Paper-pieced Stars" by Carol Doak and found the Minnesota Star. I ordered my fabrics (that's the point of the stash bee, right, to build up your stash? LOL) and made my copies...then let life get in the way until yesterday.

But now, it's done, and fabulous! I took you at your word that a dab of violet would be okay... It's a 16" block by the way...I just thought that size sounded nice.

I definitely look forward to seeing these quilt blocks up on the wall. Mine will be in the mail to you on Tuesday!

Hive 2 - March Block for Stephanie

Courthouse Stairs all finished for Stephanie.

Hive 8 March Blocks for Sylvia

Hive 8 March Blocks for Sylvia

Sylvia these are on their way to you today! One of those top blocks turned into your signature block. Simple is always difficult for me, so these are my second attempt. The first set will go into a sampler quilt I'm making with duplicates of everyone's blocks.   I can't wait to see your finished product 😍

Hive 1, March block for Ophélie

Hi!

Here is my block. Still can't believe, but I made the first one too small :( I've measured the template, and as I discovered after finishing - I did it wrong (now I know what "measure twice, cut once" REALLY means ;)
This is going to be marvellous quilt! Colours are divine - hope you will like my version :)

Lori's March Blocks

Toot!  Toot!  or is it  Chugga, chugga?

How silly is that?

I enjoyed making these for your father.  Maybe these  train blocks will strike a long-term familiar note for him.  My husband said they are realistic and he named the companies and lines they belonged to.

But they definitely won't look girly, lol.

They'll be going in the post from Maryland tomorrow morning.

Hive 6 March Block for Lori

Hi Lori!

At first I was thinking I wouldn't be able to make a block like you wanted because I didn't have any fish fabric!  Then I re-read your instructions and realized you gave other options and that was just for bonus points.  Hee.  Hee.  So here are the two blocks that I will be sending your way!

And the second one always makes me smile.  I have never seen blue eyed critters before and here are a whole bunch of them staring at me.  This fabric cracks me up.  These blocks were a lot of fun to make and I can't wait to see the finished quilt you make for your dad.

March blocks for Lori

Here are 2 blocks for your father's quilt Lori.  I need to remember to measure twice and cut once.  My first block was about 1/8 th  of an inch too small.  These are just right.  Can't wait to see your finished quilt!

Hive 1 March Block for Ophélie

Ophélie picked the Treasure Hunt block for our hive to make this month.  I enjoy paper piecing, so I had fun putting this one together, but I agonized for quite a while over the fabric selection (and realized my stash was pretty light on both mustard and dark pink...).

Oph--I'll be putting your block in the mail this week.  Can't wait to see your quilt all together!

Hive 5 - March Block

This month has been crazy but I finally got a chance to sit down today and make Maja's block for March.  This was actually the first piecing I got to do on my new sewing machine (I bought a Janome 1600 straight stitch machine at QuiltCon)!  That should tell you how my month went - no sewing for almost an entire month!

Maja asked for a black and white Irish Chain block with a touch of gray.  I had already set aside all of my black and gray fabrics from my block last month so it was really easy to cut right into cutting.

Here's my finished block!

I made my strip sets a bit longer than required so I have a few extra 2" wide pieced strips that I'll send along as well.  Hopefully you can work them in to some scrappy blocks!

Hope you like how the block turned out!

March Hive 7 - Block for Em and her Bubba

Hi Bee Mates
What a quick block to make Em! Thankyou says my overcommitted brain LOL

I popped a couple of extra HST in the bag as I hadn't read you request properly and overdid the navy and underdid the grey....instructions challenge me ;)
See you next month Rebecca @oneweebird

March block Hive 7

Emily chose these beautiful colors as a reminder of her happy place.  I think they look so nice together and I am a huge HST fan!  But man - random is so hard for me!  LOL!

Hope you like it, Em!  In the mail tomorrow!  Ish...... because maybe I don't want to go to the postoffice tomorrow.....but I will try!  :)

Em's March Hive 7 Blocks!

I LOVE your color choices! I hope this fits in well with your blocks and I can't wait to see how it comes together. I also love that you created your own swatch based on a picture you took. This quilt is you through and through. :)

March Meandering for Patty

This was the perfect block for a relaxing evening listening to music and just going with the flow.  My first block ever using just solids.  Patty, I think your quilt will be lovely with all of the unexpected lines and soft colors.  I hope this works for you.

Hive 6 Crash Blocks for Lori

Hope you can add these to your father's quilt.

Hive 7 Block for Em

Em wanted a block that reminded her of the colours of Yosemite, a place I've never seen but would love to.  Her instructions were simple and included colours that are easily found in the black hole I call my stash!

The calendar may say it's spring but there's no sign of it here.  I'm envious of all the lovely photos you all post of flowers, green grass, and barefooted children!

Hive 2 March Block for Stephanie

Oh my giddy aunt!  I finished my block for Stephanie and mailed it a week ago, but forgot to post it or let Stephanie know it is on the way!!!

So here it is Stephanie.  The colours are a bit lighter than the pic suggests with the poor lighting on a dull and cloudy day in the UK.  I hope you like it and it fits in with the others.

Smiles from Kate

March block for Patty

Patty hit me with a double-doozy of quilting fears: solids AND curves. I had to hit up friends for the solids since my stash contains none, and they totally came through. As for the curves part, Alison V. from our hive posted a link to this video in our Facebook group, which was a perfect reference.

Hope you like this, Patty!

Hive 1 block for Ophelie

Happy March Ophelie.  Diane G from Hive One here with your March block.  I hope the weather is better in Paris than in Wisconsin.  We have had a very grey and cloudy winter.  I really enjoyed making your block for March.  The variety of colors was festive.  The size of the pattern on my paper was a bit small probably due to the paper size conversion between Europe and US standards.  Anyway, I just cut the block 6.5" x 6.5" in the final step.  I also added an 1/8" stitch to the outside edge to stabilize all the seams for shipping and handling.

Here is the front:

And here is a photo of the back to see the seams and outside edge stitching:

Enjoy !!  dg

Hive 4 Improv For Patty...

For the Stash Bee block for March, our Queen has asked that we do an improve block using the Liberated Quiltmaking and Minimal Quiltmaking techniques of Gwen Marston. Our Queen also chose a muted palette of solids with small bits of high contrast. This type of piecing and this palette are way outside my comfort range.

I was very nervous when I started and tried my hardest to not go with my love for symmetry. It's still kind of there if you ask me.
I was feeling pretty good about inserting those diagonal bits of color so I decided to go for it and attempt the curved piecing. That turned out to be so much easier than I anticipated so I attempted another one.
Overall I'm pleased with how the block turned out, I hope our Queen likes this. I'll be honest, I don't see myself ever making a quilt with this technique. It just isn't my style. But I am interested to see the finished quilt.

Hive 5 March Maja's Block

Hello Stash Bee-ers. Here is Maja's Irish chain block. The instruction were fantastic but I struggled getting the first block 14.5'
 So I made three more...

and there's NEARLY 14.5
Maja all four are in the post tomorrow.

March Block for Hive 9

Hi Shauna!
There's another block hiding underneath--hopefully you like them both!
They went in the mail to you this past Thursday morning.
Enjoy the rest of the weekend!

March Hive 4 block for Patty

As I informed our Hive Mama, I originally made two blocks, hated them, cut them up, and then used the salvageable pieces to make one block that I am very happy with.

This will be in the mail today!

March Stash Bee Hive 1 block for Ophélie

Hi Ophélie,

Hope you like this block! I enjoyed making it for you!  Be well, T

March Hive 6 Blocks for Lori

I enjoyed making these blocks so much I have asked my guild members to make some for our monthly raffle! I also enjoyed deep searching into my fabrics to find fishing related motifs, and discovering that 3-4" motifs are especially wonderful in this size block. I hope your dad enjoys these, Lori. I will mail these tomorrow.  (Don't worry-only the photo of the block with the flies was cropped too closely!)

March Churn Dash Blocks for Sylvia

One of the reasons I participate in the Stash Bee (my third year) is because all of the different blocks of inspiration I get to be a part of.  This month Sylvia has definitely got my brain buzzing.  A deconstructed churn dash block where the possibilities are endless.  I had fun playing with placement.

I'm sending Sylvia 4 blocks and a bunch of leftovers for her to continue to play with.  This is definitely a quilt I want to see what the finished quilt looks like.

Hive 1 March Block

Here’s my Treasure Hunt block for Oph. I love paper piecing so I was overjoyed with this simple block. I am a convert to mustard now! Hope you like it!
