Hive One Finish

My second Stash Bee quilt is finally finished!!
The first one made with Stash Bee Blocks was sent to Moore Oklahoma but I think I'm going to keep this one!! I love it!! I love the bright colors and its scrappy-ness.

Thanks to all the stash bee gals for sending me some great blocks! If you don't see your block in this quilt check the one that was sent to Oklahoma.

Thank you all for making blocks!!

Finished Stash Bee Charity Quilt

Danny had asked me to repost my Stash Bee finish that was on my blog...

I finally finished my Stash Bee Quilt! I was so lucky to have a great group of gals sending me blocks, I also received a few from outside the group to complete this quilt.  I would like to thank everyone who helped make it!! I think it turned out amazing. I had asked bee members to make wonky star blocks and wonky log cabin blocks.  I had enough blocks to make one quilt for charity and one quilt to keep. This one that I finished first will be going to a new home at some point. I would like to keep it in my community so I thought I would see if a local organization had someone that could use it.

And the back...
 Perfect size!

I absolutely love it. It has four 12.5 inch blocks across and five 12.5 inch blocks down. I added a border and it now measures approximately 52 inches by 64 inches.
I quilted it with straight lines about 1/4 inch apart. After it was washed it became so crinkly and cuddly. I am sure at its new home it will be loved.

Thanks for stopping in and thanks to all that helped!!

Vickey

Update... This quilt went to Moore Oklahoma after the tornado.

Stash Bee 2013 finished Quilt

Hi Ladies!  Danny asked me to repost my finished quilt top from the Stash Bee 2013.  These blocks were very simple because they were used as the guest book for my wedding in April 2013.  My husband and I had a very small wedding with our very closest friends and family only.  It was perfect and the blocks everyone in Stash Bee made for me only added to the night!  Each person wrote us a message and signed a block for our special day.  I also used a few to document our attendants, wedding date and other important information.  - Sara

October Hive 4 fineto -

Hey Christy -
I finished these last week and put them on my design wall and forgot to send them to you!  eek!

They were so fun to do!
My creams are a little different b/c I had Kona Bone and then cut it wrong and didn't have enough for 2.
But I hope you like!
I used my favorite fabric, the brown w/ chandeliers!
I used to be a lighting designer so I'm obsessed w/ chandeliers, ha!

Happy Thanksgiving all!!!

Blocks for Alison

Two blocks for Alison

Oh dear, they were disaster from the beginning, these two are the fourth and fifth attempts after much unpicking and a fortune in the swear box.  I think the design is lovely, the method just does not enter my brain patterns.  Today is gray and dull and I had to photograph them indoors and because I was trying to avoid shadows the one on the right looks an odd shape, it is the same size and shape as its friend, i promise.  Only Allah makes that which is perfect, so maybe my blocks will keep the universe on an even keel with everyone else's perfect ones.

Hive #4 November blocks for Alison

While I was making the 2nd block, I thought I'd screwed it up. As I was making its replacement, I figured out what I'd done wrong - so you get three.  Love the trio of colors together.

November Hive #4 Block

Hello lovely ladies of Hive #4! Thanks for sticking in all this time!!

I'm Alison. I blog at Little Bunny Quilts and I'm currently hosting a paper piecing quilt along if you want to join!!

1.    Name? Alison

2.     Where do you live? Central PA, originally from Michigan

4.    Family status (married, single, kids, grand kids)? I just got married two weeks ago!

5.    Hardest quilt thing you have ever made? Would you make it again? I think anything with hand quilting is hard because it takes so long and I get very impatient. Otherwise I made a quilt with curves and that took a lot of patience.

6.    Favorite dessert food? Any dessert food. I love all desserts, ice cream, pie -- you name it, I love it, unless it has cherries in it.

7.    Last time you laughed REALLY hard (and what was so funny)? My husband just says hilarious things all the time. His sense of humor always makes me feel better when I'm feeling blue.

8.    What is your day job (or night job :) )? Grad student studying chemistry. It's much less impressive than it sounds!!

9.    When did you learn to sew? Who taught you? I learned to sew from my mom when I was in elementary school. I started my first quilt when I was 15.

10.    Do you remember the first thing you ever sewed? I remember practicing stitches with embroidery floss on muslin and then I did a LOT of cross stitching before I started quilting.

11.    Life philosophy? God honors those who honor him.

For my block I've chosen to use Jess's Moda Bake Shop Pattern Simply Woven tutorial. The tutorial on the MBS website is fantastic, so please follow that, but if you have questions, just let me know.

The only advice I will add is to pin your pieces together so that the strips that you cut end up straight after you add the additional strips between them.

As far as colors, please use colors similar to apple green, shades of yellow, and bright orange. Here are my test blocks:

Please use Kona White and if you can make two blocks, that would be fantastic!!

October Hive 4

Here are my blocks -- they will be in the mail on Monday.

Blocks for Christy

Two blocks for Christy, the outer points are brown I promise, it is just the poor light that makes them look black.  I will post them tomorrow without fail.  I hope they will play happily with the other blocks you receive.

Hive 4 July and August blocks

I'm continuing my great catch up on bee blocks - I've only made one each for you sorry ladies, as international postage rates have sky rocketed and it's costing me $7 if I post anything over 50g (normally one block just makes it under 50g).

Sorry they're so late - I'll try to post them later this week.

Sorry about the terrible photo for this one - it is actually square I promise!

What are Some Examples of Superb Stash Bee Blocks?

Let's be honest: we all want to walk away from a bee experience with beautiful blocks that comprise to make an even more stunning quilt. Am I right? In past bees I've participated in, I have heard the overwhelming cry from so many Queen Bees of how their returned blocks were not what they had hoped for.

The colors weren't right.
The size was off.
The workmanship was subpar.

Terrible, heart-wrenching stuff. So, how is Stash Bee going to be any different?

My hope is the difference will be through communication for the duration of the bee, and education up-front (hence all the blog posts and FAQs). Ultimately, I think everything hinges on the choice of block.

There are some things to consider before choosing a block for Stash Bee. I outlined them in the Rules section, but will copy/paste it here for your convenience:

---------------------

Be mindful that every quilter has idiosyncrasies when choosing your block:

-Some will be using unwashed fabric. Some will use washed fabric.
-Some will use an exact ¼” SA. Some will use a scant ¼” SA.
-Some will press open. Some will press to the dark side.

You will want to be specific in your tutorial regarding preferences, if you have any. Because this is a stash-centered bee, blocks will be scrappy by nature.

-Choose blocks that do not have to be exactly the same to fit in a quilt (Granny Square blocks do not make a good bee block because if all the SAs do not match up, the Queen Bee will have to trim down, losing some points in order to use all blocks).
-Choose blocks that can be sashed (sashing blocks yourself can bring in the solid color you desired for your quilt to have continuity without having to send fabric to all the members of your hive).
-Choose blocks inspired by a place, a photo, a color scheme, a theme.
-Choose blocks that are paper pieced to ensure accuracy in size.
-Choose blocks without a size requirement.

---------------------

In the past, Stash Bee has allowed members to choose line specific solids from each hive mate in order to create consistency among the blocks. Moving forward, asking for specific fabrics will no longer be allowed in order to ensure that members are truly creating from their stashes and not being required to go out and purchase new fabric to make a block.

Workmanship issues are covered in the Stash Bee Rules.

Below I have curated an enormous number of pictures to give all potential and existing Stash Bee members an idea of what makes a good bee block. Have a look through these images to get a sense of which block designs may leave you with a smile when you have your blocks returned to you.

Blocks that have a varied background. Prints and solids, same hue. Use low value (or low volume) fabrics for background.

Blocks that can be sashed.

This is a bee quilt. The Queen asked members to make blocks using HSTs, then sashed in her background fabric.

String quilts are scrappy and can easily be squared to a different size and sashed to fit into any quilt.

Color specific rectangles, sashed.

You don't have to sash in white.

Or a neutral, for that matter.

Blocks that are scrappy, possibly using a new technique.

Blocks that don't have to be square, but follow a specific color palette.

How fun would it be to just give your hive mates a color palette and let them go? They could make any size block using the colors you specify with an image. Imagine the possibilities!
Source

This was a bee quilt. Queen asked for a specific sized block using colorful, rainbow scraps and randomly placed white, wonky stars.
Source

This was a bee quilt. Queen asked for specific sized block comprised of scrappy fabrics in a certain color way. She also asked for a few white squares be thrown in.
Source

This is a bee quilt. There was a specific color palette in play and the Queen asked hive mates to make any shape/size block with flying geese, then she sashed them in once she received them all.
Source

Source

Source

Blocks that use negative space.

The nice thing about blocks that use a lot of negative space is that size isn't all too important. Ask for an 8.5" block and square them down to 8" yourself. All the blocks will fit into your design and the quilt will still look marvelous!

This was a bee quilt. The Queen asked for a block up to a certain size following a specific color palette and using pinwheels.

This is a bee block quilt in progress. Queen asked for wonky white stars (all these whites are different. Some Michael Miller Mirror Dot, some Pearl Bracelet, some faint polka dot, etc.) with dark blue, dark purple, black and dark grey background.

And then there is the spin on this idea which you can see here.

Blocks that are scrappy, but the same design.

Paper Pieced Blocks

There are lots of paper pieced block ideas here, but please remember that while paper pieced blocks may look neat and ensure a certain size requirement, Stash Bee blocks should take members no more than an average of 1.5 hours to complete.

And, if you still haven't found a block you like, you could always peruse the Quilting Bee Blocks Flickr stream. If you have a Flickr, you should join this group and link up your pictures once you've completed your bee blocks.

I hope this post has served as tool for you in deciding on the perfect bee block for Stash Bee. If you have any questions about the particular block you have chosen for your hive mates to complete, feel free to contact your Hive Mama or me, Danny, the Bee Mama. We can help guide you and offer feedback on how successful we think your bee block will be.

Now for the hard part: choosing your block!!

Danny
